"Sea Song" | A Two-Person Exhibition feat. Liz Rundorff Smith & Teresa Roche
The Miller Gallery is pleased to present Sea Song, a collaborative duo exhibition featuring artists Teresa Roche and Liz Rundorff Smith. On view throughout May, the exhibition explores the rhythm, movement, and memory of the sea through a layered dialogue of material, texture, and form.

Bringing together original artwork alongside a new line of textiles and wallcoverings, Sea Song expands beyond traditional formats—blending fine art with material design. The exhibition creates an immersive environment that feels both grounded and transportive, reflecting on the ways the ocean shapes not only the physical landscape, but also our emotional and sensory experiences.

Drawing inspiration from the natural rhythms of the coastline, Sea Song unfolds as a visual meditation on water in motion. Soft palettes, organic forms, and layered surfaces echo the shifting qualities of the sea—from quiet, glassy mornings to windswept, textural currents. Together, the artists create a compelling dialogue between structure and fluidity, permanence and change.

Teresa Roche
Teresa Roche is a self-taught, mixed media artist based in Greenville, South Carolina, working across acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, oil pastels, and collage. Drawing deeply from memory and nostalgia, Roche builds up layered surfaces only to carve back into them—scratching and sanding to reveal earlier marks beneath. Through this intuitive process, she transforms personal histories into newly abstracted compositions, lending her work a sense of depth, erosion, and rediscovery.

Liz Rundorff Smith
In contrast, Liz Rundorff Smith brings a materially rich and conceptually driven practice shaped by her background in both sculpture and painting. Based in Travelers Rest, South Carolina, Rundorff Smith holds a BA in Studio Art from The College of Wooster and an MFA in Painting from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, with additional studies in France and Italy. Her work has been exhibited nationally and is held in notable private and corporate collections, including the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Rundorff Smith’s work elevates the mundane, exploring how objects and materials carry memory and meaning. Drawing on the visual language of domestic spaces and past design eras, her compositions incorporate pattern, color, and embellishment—fringe, metallic finishes, and ornamental details—to evoke nostalgia while subtly unsettling it. Referencing shrines, keepsakes, and places of veneration, her work reflects on sentimentality, loss, and the passage of time.

Together, Roche and Rundorff Smith create a dynamic interplay between process and object, intuition and structure—resulting in a body of work that feels both deeply personal and collectively resonant.

“Sea Song is about capturing a feeling as much as a place,” says gallery owner Kayla Twomey Flamman. “There’s a rhythm to this exhibition that feels deeply connected to Charleston and the Lowcountry, but also universally resonant. It’s immersive, calming, and quietly powerful.”
