Guest Curator | Natalie Papier

The Miller Gallery is thrilled to welcome our first guest curator of 2025, Natalie Papier!

Natalie is an interior designer and host of Artfully Designed on the Magnolia Network. Natalie’s unique design approach led her to writing her first book Start with the Art. Known for her vibrant and eclectic style, her work has been featured in Domino, Rue Magazine, Real Simple, HGTV Magazine, Luxe Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens and more. Natalie has a signature wallpaper line with Mitchell Black and a lighting collection with Mitzi.

Natalie offers design services through her firm, Home Ec., out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Natalie’s design services are centered on creating spaces that authentically reflect the personalities and passions of her clients. She believes that homes should be brimming with life, character and warmth. A strong advocate for art, Natalie often collaborates with artists and makers, incorporating their unique creations into her designs.

Along with her husband and kids, Kellen and Maddie, Natalie moved from Chicago to Charlotte in 2020 (with dog, Billy, and cat, Boots, in tow) and brought her design firm and a whole lot of color along with her.

Natalie's Book: Start With The Art | The Smart Way To Decorate Any Room on Any Budget

I have found that most interior decorating books save hanging pictures on the wall for last. But I found myself starting with the art as inspiration and creating a soulful space around it creates a room you love, simply beginning with something that moves you.

Art is everywhere, and I wanted to encourage others on how to find it—whether it’s a beloved heirloom object, a painting, a fun collection, or a textile. The book offers visual guides, inspiration, and a whole lot of straight talk, helping you build from your inspiration to incorporate the textures, patterns, colors, and furnishings that make spaces feel perfect for you.

Starting with the art offers endless freedom to decorate with what you already have, liberating you from budget pressure while transforming rooms that speak to—and from—the soul.

Natalie’s Art Picks!

American Dream by Rachael Reese

"There is something truly nostalgic about American Dream. It takes me back to the hustle and bustle of a busy Sunday morning having breakfast with my grandma. There is a sense of joy and liveliness in this work. Would love to see this hung in a happy, sunny kitchen."

Good Kisser in Golden Rainier Composition 1 by Olivia Bonilla

"I am obsessed with Good Kisser. This would be such a statement piece in a space. I love its lifelike, take-a-big-bite-of-me scale and the quirkiness this would bring into a room!"

Love Potion No. 9 by Kristin Shearer

"Love Potion caught my eye with its bold, look at me reds. I love the way the composition of the shapes feel like they are engaging in a balancing act. This piece screams, look at me!"

Masters of the Subtle by Mione Plant

"I love that Mione's work has such a formulaic approach with crisp measured lines. The longer you stare at this piece the more it transforms before your eyes. It really demands your attention."

Maroon Evening by Laura Dargan

"This work by Laura Dargan caught my eye because of the abstract figurative form and the loose brushstrokes but the framing takes it to the next level! I would pull those shapes out into a room design by incorporating other organic shaped pieces in the decor."

Peach Paradise by Kate Hooray Osmond

"Peach Paradise's combination of an unexpected color palette and the movement in this piece makes my eyes roam from shape to shape. I love the way the red circle in particular demands your attention. If I were designing a room around this piece, I would bring in those olive tones in the furniture and use a small unexpected pop of red in a vase or pillow to compliment this piece."

Tequila Sunrise by Kristin Shearer

"Bottom line, I have always been drawn to oranges in art. Something about that happy pop of orange always draws me in. But Tequila Sunrise's color combination makes it a must have!"
