DRIFT: A Group Exhibition

Nine Contemporary Artists. Twenty-Four Skate Decks. One Unexpected Canvas.

This August, The Miller Gallery invites visitors to experience DRIFT, a summer group exhibition that reimagines the skateboard deck as a collectible work of art. Featuring original decks by nine contemporary artists from across the East Coast, the exhibition explores what happens when artists trade traditional canvases for an object deeply rooted in creativity, individuality, and movement.

In a coastal city like Charleston - where surfboards lean against porches, skateboards roll through downtown streets, and creativity seems to follow the tide - the skateboard feels right at home. Long before it became gallery-worthy, it was already a canvas for self-expression. DRIFT celebrates that spirit while bringing it into a contemporary fine art setting.

Each participating artist approached the deck differently. Some embraced bold color and abstraction, while others incorporated collage, texture, pattern, and storytelling. The result is a collection of 24 one-of-a-kind works that are playful, approachable, and unmistakably personal.

"DRIFT is about giving artists permission to play," says gallery owner Kayla Twomey Flamman. "There's something refreshing about asking someone to step outside of their usual format and create on a surface that's so familiar, yet completely different. Every artist surprised us."

Whether you're an avid collector, someone who grew up skating, or simply looking for something unexpected, DRIFT offers a fresh perspective on contemporary art - and a reminder that inspiration often comes from the places we least expect.
