Guest Curator | Laura Dargan

The Miller Gallery is thrilled to welcome our next guest curator of 2024, Laura Dargan! We loved seeing which pieces Laura chose for our collaboration, and learning what draws her into the works.

Meet Laura

Laura grew up in Columbia, SC before attending College of Charleston and deciding that Charleston was where she wanted to live. Art was always a part of her life and a passion but never something that she thought could be a full time career. After exploring a few different career paths and realizing that none of them were for her, Laura picked up art again and decided to pursue a career as an artist.

Self-taught, Charleston-based artist Laura Dargan is known for both geometric abstraction and experimental figurative paintings. Dargan’s work explores the interaction between unexpected color combinations and irregular shapes. She states that her goal is to create “visual energy”, which is clear from her playful use of form and joyful colors on canvas. Each viewer is left to interpret and connect with the paintings on their own terms.

MG: How would you describe your interior style?

LD: I would say my interior style is eclectic. I like to blend old and new and incorporate pieces from different styles.

MG: You have such an incredible collection, tell us about how and what you look for when collecting.

LD:  Thank you! I like so many different styles of artwork and I really enjoy collecting pieces when I can. I tend to look for pieces with which I have a connection. Whether that means I have an emotional reaction to the work, the colors are really nice, or it’s something I found while traveling, I want to be able to look at the art in my home and be reminded of the time when it was purchased.

MG: Any tips for curating a space?

LD: I think that layering pieces within a home that have personality or a story behind them always brings the space together in an interesting way.

We’ve known and loved Laura for years. Her exquisite taste is something we have always admired tremendously. Let’s dig into Laura's curation!

"I love the movement in this sculpture. The texture adds a nice contrast with any decor."

"The way that Teresa utilizes different mediums in this piece to create depth and interest is really nice."

"Who doesn’t love a Kate Hooray Sun piece!"

"I really enjoy how Rachael puts together her food (or soon to be food) paintings. Her perspective is unique and fun and these fish are exactly that!"

"This piece is so playful and it adds so much energy to the space."

"Scot’s mark making is something else. He’s really good at telling a story through his marks while maintaining that abstract, organic feel."
